ARTIST’S BIO:

I was born in Tuba City on the Navajo reservation. My father, Ed Singer, is an artist and I got to see first hand the creation of art. My first memories are of drawing and, with the help of my father, occasionally making my own lithographs at the age of four years old. I never have had any formal art training. I even stopped drawing and painting at the age of 16 years old. After many years of drifting around avoiding my artistic talent, including four years of service in the United States Marines, at the age of 31 I came to accept that I am an artist. Although I have had a late start I do realize and honor my obligation to my art.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

I love to paint, and I love to draw. There is little else in the world that gives me the same satisfaction as painting and drawing does. I have spent a good deal of my lifetime trying to please others and I have learned with near fatal results that that is absolutely no way to live. So, I paint and draw to celebrate my will. I try to imbue my paintings and drawings with the energy of that will. The nature of paint and surface is what I find the most fascinating relationship in all of painting. To me, the subject is the least important aspect. What I love is how the problems of the lie (the lie of painting) are solved with paint.
